Stars sign Denis Gurianov once again
Tags:  Dallas Stars

After much restructuring, the Dallas Stars have signed Denis Gurianov once again. The rookie wing will be returning for a two year contract valued at $5.1 million, or $2.55 million per year. The Stars are excited to see the young player returning after being moved last year to the AHL’s Texas Stars, a junior development team that feeds into the NHL’s Dallas Stars. Players drafted into the Dallas Stars can be placed on the Texas Stars team, and vice versa, as needed between the two leagues.

The star Russian wing is still a rookie to the NHL, despite having played professionally in Russia’s Minor Hockey League and Kontinental Hockey League since the age of seventeen. In his time with the MHL and KHL, Gurianov played as a wing for team Lada Togliatti. Similar to the Dallas and Texas Stars relationship, Lada Togliatti has teams in multiple league levels of hockey – from junior leagues all the way up the Russian Superleague (formerly known as the International Hockey League), the highest level of Russian professional hockey.

For his American hockey debut, Gurianov was drafted to the Texas Stars for the 2016 season. After his first season, he was moved to the Dallas Stars for a year, and then back to the Texas Stars. In 2018, Gurianov was brought back to the Dallas Stars roster. Playing for the Dallas Stars against the Calgary Flames in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, Gurianov became the first player to score four goals in a playoff game for the team. There’s little doubt that he’ll continue to be a valuable piece to the Stars’ roster, especially since he’s proven that he comes through when it matters most.

Though Dallas fans are excited for his re-signing, there is still some concern that Gurianov could be picked up by another team in the off-season, even more so after his recent triumphs. In his current state, Gurianov is still considered a “restricted free agent.” This essentially means that he has played in the NHL long enough to no longer be considered a rookie, but has not yet played in enough games to be considered unrestricted. In the period before this next year’s season begins, there is still a possibility that Gurianov could accept a better offer from another team in the league. Being a hot commodity after his show-stopping performances last season, only time will tell if Gurianov stays with the team. We are certainly hopeful that he’ll stick with the Stars, and are excited to keep you updated on any breaking Dallas Stars news.

District 2 school board race ends November 3rd
Tags:  Dallas ISD, schools

Dallas ISD’s second district will see a vote next month on November 3rd. The vote was originally pushed back due to COVID, giving the candidates vying for District 2’s spot extra time for their campaigns. The three candidates for this year’s race are Nancy Rodriguez, Alex Enriquez, and incumbent Dustin Marshall. Rodriguez and Enriquez both will be challenging Marshall with an aim to bring trust back to the school’s board, after years of the DISD’s enrollment declining. Marshall plans to continue his efforts to bring the district up to par with other schools in the state. We’ll be breaking down each candidate’s viewpoints to help you make your decision for District 2’s future.

Nancy Rodriguez is a current parent and volunteer with Dallas ISD, who grew up in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. She has her master’s in social work from Hunter College of City University of New York, and has worked in the social work field for over twenty years. Rodriguez hopes to bring her passion for helping students with special needs, an often undervalued group in Dallas ISDs. She also seeks to make the ISD more inviting for all students by bringing in more teachers and finding more ways to bring classrooms to or below the state mandated limits on capacity.

A graduate of Dallas ISD’s District 2 himself, Alex Enriquez plans to use his firsthand experience to benefit the district and its policies. Enriquez has worked with Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson on her campaign, moving to Washington DC to do so. Before that, he graduated with his bachelor’s from Florida State University. His focus for the campaign is bringing a sense of transparency that he believes has been missing from the school board. Enriquez plans to use his three priorities – community, equity, and excellence – to bring the board the transparency and effectiveness it needs.

Incumbent Dustin Marshall plans to continue the work he has already done to bring Dallas ISD’s test scores up to par with the rest of the state. He employs a data-driven viewpoint for the schools, that prioritizes rewarding the best teachers and schools in the district. He also has plans to invest more in facilities for students, getting rid of vacant buildings while expanding current ones and their classrooms. Marshall has an MBA from Northwestern University and is the CEO of Hazel’s Hot Shot, a freight company. He has previously worked as a management consultant for Bain & Company, where he learned the importance of the analytical viewpoint he takes.

With the student-focus of Rodriguez, the transparency sought by Enriquez, and the analytical approach of Marshall, each candidate for the upcoming election brings a unique perspective to District 2. The election is sure to be a close race between the three candidates, and we hope that our local readers will make a well-informed vote on November 3rd.
New “Solterra” community planned for Mesquite
Tags:  Mesquite

Texas-based Huffines Communities has recently announced plans to build a massive master-planned community in Mesquite. The community will be placed on the site of Lucas Farms, and be built around the existing farmland and orchards. The new community will be the largest that Mesquite has ever seen.

The master planned community, named Solterra, will feature 3900 new homes and be built on nearly fifteen-hundred acres of land. It will be built on Lucas Farms’ farmland, but will incorporate aspects from the historic farm to keep its integrity. In addition to the homes, Huffine Communities has plans to build fishing lakes and miles of hiking and biking trails for residents. One of its most prominent features will be the massive swimming pool that features a beach and play areas for the community’s children. Solterra will also partner with the local ISD to offer schooling to children within the community. The neighborhood will also feature a full coffee shop, fitness center, clubhouses, and offices for its residents. In typical Huffines Communities fashion, parts of the neighborhood will be organized into “villages” to promote friendliness among nearby neighbors. Apart for visits to the grocery store, the neighborhood plans to give its residents very little reason to leave and seems to have it all.

Solterra’s creator, Huffines Communities, has been building in Texas since 1997, organized by brothers Donald and Phillip Huffines. The company only builds master-planned communities, passionate about a holistic approach to neighborhood design. In that holistic approach, Huffines pays attention to every detail, applying their touch to anything from home design to manhole covers. The company also places heavy emphasis on their entrances, typically placing lakes or some other calming feature near the openings of their communities. Huffines has already designed multiple communities throughout Texas, including the Heartland neighborhood in Heartland and the Inspiration neighborhood of St. Paul, both of which have won the Dallas Builder’s Association’s McSam Award.

Huffines plans to have the first phase of Solterra built by 2022, which will include around seven hundred homes and the central amenity center that will house the offices, clubhouses, and a fitness center. The company has stated that they want to make open space a priority for the neighborhood, so it is sure to feel like a part of Texas.

The new neighborhood will be the largest master-planned community that Mesquite has ever seen. As a suburb of Dallas, Mesquite has seen many Dallas residents move in as they attempt to move away from the hustle and bustle of crowded Dallas. As more of these residents move in, more housing is necessary to keep up with the influx and growth of Mesquite. With almost four thousand homes planned, Solterra is sure to be essential to house these new residents and provide a space for them to live their lives. We look forward to watching the development of this brand-new, all-encompassing community and to seeing what it will bring to Mesquite.
The most interesting Dallas breakfast spots
Tags:  Dallas dining

Dallas has long been home to a number of top-of-the-line breakfast spots. From old-school, retro diners to upscale brunch havens, the city has everything you could want in terms of breakfast foods. Our list highlights some of the most interesting options that the city offers, all of which have brought more great food to Dallas’ bustling culinary scene.

Crossroads Diner has been a must for breakfast diners for years. The classic diner was founded by chefs Tom Fleming and Carl Strelecki after they had each spent years in the industry. Their sticky buns, created and perfected by Chef Fleming, are to die for. Other popular items at Crossroads are the buttermilk pancakes and the Canadian bacon eggs benedict. The restaurant is known for its enormous portions, so everyone is sure to leave feeling full. Stop in to grab one of the largest sticky buns you’ve ever had next time you’re on Preston Road.

Our next on the list takes a turn towards the modern with its food. Whisk Crepes Café has been around since 2015, founded by Julien Eelsen. Eelsen, a native of Paris, France, left the airline business to create Whisk after falling in love with Dallas. Whisk Crepes Café’s most popular entrees are their crepes of course. The La Complete is a classic crepe that can do no wrong, while the Paris, TX crepe adds a bit of Texas to the French classic – using smoked brisket, jalapenos, and barbeque cream. Another sought-after item at Whisk is the 7 O’Clock breakfast sandwich, perfect for those on-the-go. Though only being open for five years, Whisk Crepes Café has managed to make quite an impact on Dallas’ breakfast scene.

Healthy eaters, look no further. The newest restaurant on this list, The Market Local Comfort Café, specializes in vegetarian breakfast options and is Dallas Kosher Certified. The Market opened in May of 2019 near the Galleria Mall, and has been incredibly popular ever since. The space itself is beautiful and modern, a design created by the owners and another designer to reflect the eclectic food served. The Market’s chef, Jordona Kohn, comes from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Dallas, where she graduated as valedictorian. Kohn has worked primarily in Dallas’ culinary scene, but has also spent time across the world, venturing as far as Jerusalem. Some of Jordona and The Market’s most popular items are the breakfast sandwiches, of which there are multiple choices that are all great, and their fabulous baked pastries and bread. Another one of their much-loved menu items is the avocado toast, made with their fresh baked bread. If you’re looking for great kosher food or just an interesting change from standard breakfast-fare, be sure to make visiting The Market a priority.

A Dallas classic since 1961, Kuby’s Sausage House has been making some of the best German sausages and specialty meats for years. Founded by Karl Kuby when he decided to bring his family’s generations-old tradition of sausage-making from Germany to Texas, Kuby’s has been the place for German food since its start. Sausage just so happens to be a staple of breakfast foods as well, so you can be sure to find great breakfast at Kuby’s. Their breakfast biscuit, a massive biscuit with sausage, eggs, gravy, and potatoes, and their Build Your Own Omelet are their two most popular breakfast items. The restaurant also has German pancakes for vegetarians. If you are a meat-eater, be sure to stop in and give Kuby’s a try.

To complete our list, we have San Martin Bakery and Café. San Martin hails from Guatemala, where their pastries are beloved. Dallas is their only US location, which serves up the same great foods and coffee as its Guatemalan counterparts. Their most popular menu item is the Salvadoreño, a Salvadorian classic that features two stuffed tortillas topped with fried eggs and ranchera sauce and is served with plantains on the side. Their baked goods are also near-perfect. This last breakfast spot is an excellent place for South American breakfast-fare and straight-from-the-source Guatemalan coffee.

From classic diners to the eclectic to ethnic foods, Dallas has a ton of excellent breakfast options available. We hope our list motivates you to give some of these great spots a try!
Dallas passes new city budget for 2021
Tags:  City council, local news, Dallas police

Dallas City Council has voted to increase the overall budget for next year to $3.8 billion. The vote was heavily contended on both sides due to this years’ efforts and calls to defund police departments across the nation. Perhaps the most difficult question on next years’ budget was whether to increase or decrease police spending.

At the end of an hours long meeting and after months of budget town hall meetings and feedback, City Council voted to increase the budget for this next year. Though the largest portion of the budget goes towards the costs of running the city, including economic development and infrastructure, the budget also features an amendment to police spending. General police spending was increased by $8 million, while taking $7 million from the police overtime budget. The decision to increase the spending budget while decreasing the overtime passed with an 11-4 vote, and upset some of the city’s leaders and citizens that were fighting for a larger change to defund Dallas police following the recent calls for police reform sweeping the nation.

Overall, the vote to pass this next years’ increase, 9-6, was seen as more controversial than last years’ vote, 15-0. The reason for this sudden change from previous unanimous votes was due to the controversy surrounding police defunding.

The budget increase also features a reduction to Dallas’ current property tax rate, cutting $0.0003 per $100 assessed valuation (DallasWeekly.com). This will be a continuation of years of property tax rates, but sees a positive change for the city’s residents. Residents had largely all agreed at the town hall meetings on the cuts.

Overall, this 2021 budget attempts to meet the best of both worlds when it comes to the people of Dallas’ views regarding police, despite upset from both sides. In addition, City Council’s hope is that these changes, including the decreased property tax, will continue to provide the best way forward for the vast majority of Dallas citizens.

City lists open bid for removal of “Shingle Mountain”

Tags:  Local news, city council, Dallas

On September 24th, an open bid for the removal of the controversial 70,000 ton mountain of shingles in South Dallas to the nearby McCommas Bluff Landfill was posted.

Shingle Mountain, the abandoned roof shingle recycling facility off of Central Expressway, has been more than an eyesore for years to the city. Area residents and environmental activists alike have called for its removal due to the danger it poses to air quality, since the shingles cause fiberglass dust to fill the air. To attempt getting the mountain removed, one resident went so far as to create the Southern Sector Rising organization. The group works with other legal groups, including Downwinders At Risk and Texas Rising, to push for not only the removal of Shingle Mountain, but also changes to environmental zoning in Texas that protect low income and minority neighborhoods from other similar incidents.

Due to the massive effort by members of the Dallas community, the city listed the opening worth $450,000 and has already received bids from multiple businesses. The top bid will still have to pass City Council in a vote happening on October 13th, so members of the city are nervous, but remaining hopeful, that this will finally be it for Shingle Mountain.
